Technique aside, taking a nice picture is a matter of being at the right place, at the right time. Capturing a local landscape is relatively easy: the right place is usually known; one just needs to wait for the right time. When traveling, serendipity comes often into play. On one road trip, I made an unplanned stop around sunset to check out a place by curiosity, that's where I got the best picture of the trip.
